My favorite thing about my job is that I get to organize races. There are 4 races throughout the year and I love being in charge of them! I think if I could find a full time job as a race director - that would probably be my dream job. Until that happens, I will just enjoy the few races I get to do here at my job.
The 4th of July is big in Sandy. They have a 5K/10K race (that I’m in charge of!) in the morning, a festival during the day, a parade in the evening, and fireworks at night. It takes people from every department in the city to run a good show. And it takes a LOT of work! This week has been super hectic getting everything ready. To make things even more crazy, I am the only person from the recreation department in our office this week – so I get to do all the preparation by myself! At the beginning of the week I was really worried about getting everything done. But, I did what I always do when I get a little stressed – I made a few lists. I planned my week out so that I could have plenty of time to get everything done. It’s funny how just writing everything down makes it seem easier. I still have just as much to get done, but that list makes it seem much more manageable. I really am my father’s daughter. My dad ALWAYS had lists!
I have always been a big fan of the 4th of July – especially the 4th of July in Kaysville! I have an incredible appreciation for this country and I love having a holiday to celebrate it. I love that everyone dresses in red, white, and blue. I love that communities get together. I love staking out the best spot for the parade the night before, and immediately moving everything after the parade to save the perfect spot for the fireworks. I love post-parade root beer floats and BBQs. And I LOVE fireworks, especially when the show is timed to music. Unfortunately, since I started working for Sandy, I’ve missed out on most of the Kaysville 4th of July festivities. After working from 4:30am-3:00pm I’m too tired to do much. I do usually make it up to Kaysville for the fireworks…usually. Last year I didn’t even do that. But, I’m excited to celebrate a little differently this year. Centerville does all their 4th of July fun on Saturday. I think I’m going to make Brad come to the parade with me…maybe even the little “festival” they have during the day. And we’ll definitely have to catch the fireworks on the real 4th of July. Maybe I’ll get a nap in so I won’t be too tired!
My family went boating last weekend. It was a lot of fun…until the boat broke down in the middle of the lake! We were on our way in for the day when the boat just lost power. My brothers tried a few things to see if they could get it going, but they couldn’t. We ended up having to be towed in by some random people who stopped to ask if we were okay. It was super nice of them to help us out. They got us over to the dock. I was a little nervous about how we were going to get the boat on the trailer. But, it worked out. Aaron and actually paddled the boat from the dock to the trailer. We’re awesome like that! Hahaha! I’m glad the boat waited until the afternoon to break down because the rest of the day way really fun! I did get a pretty good sun burn. I usually don’t burn at all. I’m a very lucky red head who tans instead of frying in the sun like most red heads! I have my mom to thank for that! But, I did get a little red. And now I’m peeling! I hate peeling! I hate it because I love to peel my skin…and I get distracted by it! Hopefully it will be done soon!

Sometimes I wonder about the way my mind works. I am very, very grateful to have a good job. Most of the time I really like the people I work with. I appreciate the freedom I have to do what I need to do without anyone breathing down my back. I like being able to spend some time out and about so I’m not stuck behind a desk all day every day. BUT, sometimes I just plain do not want to go to work! I seriously struggled to get out the door this morning! I went to gym and then I spent the morning chatting with Krista and putting off getting ready to go to work. I was 45 minutes “late.” Really, I can come when I want to, as long as I put in 8 hours…but people expect me at 8:30 so I try to be there by 8:30. I’m struggling with how I can be so grateful to have the job I have and still sometimes feel like I don’t want to go!!
I heard some FABULOUS news today! I can’t eat gluten (that’s not the fabulous news…). There are a handful of restaurants that have made a real effort to accommodate gluten free diets. I frequent those restaurants. And sometimes I get tired of them. I want to go somewhere new. I want to go to the crazy Thai places and Indian places and the hold-in-the-wall secret places that my friends talk about. But, I don’t because I know I won’t be able to be there without getting sick. Today I found out that one more restaurant has wizened up and gone gluten free. Starting in May, Costa Vida made everything in their store gluten free (with the exception of the flour tortillas). All their tacos and enchiladas and salads and nachos and everything!! I am so excited!! I can’t even wait to go there!
I’m having an internal struggle about running. A few weeks ago I felt like I was runner again…so I signed up to run a half marathon in July. It will be the first long race since I had knee surgery a year ago. But, the last few weeks have been HARD!! I ran 6 miles last Saturday and it was probably the worst 6 miles I’ve ever run. I was supposed to run 8 miles this weekend. When I realized there was no way I could run this Saturday, I decided to run on Thursday. I had arranged to come into work later that morning anyway. But, when Thursday morning came around, I turned my alarm off and went back to sleep because I didn’t want to run! I still have plenty of time to get ready for the race, even if I don’t run this weekend. I just need to decide if I really want to. If I’m going to feel like I don’t want to run every week, then I should probably just bag the race. Oh decisions, decisions.

A Long-Overdue Update
Remember that one time that I didn’t blog for more than a year? And remember how this blog was supposed to be my journal? That means I haven’t really recorded anything that’s happened in my life for the past year. Really, more like two years. But, what can you do?
As I laid in bed last night (not sleeping, for some reason), I realized that a lot has happened in the last year – a lot that I would probably like to remember years from now. I kicked myself a little bit for not being more diligent. So – here I am, writing an update. Since there’s no way I could write in detail about everything that has happened, I will write a quick update on the things I feel are most important:
- I’ve traveled A LOT in the last year. I’ve been to New York (to visit Luke) and Washington (for Amber’s wedding). I went on a cruise to the Caribbean with some friends in January. I went to Disneyland with my family in March. And I went to Hawaii with my roommates in May. I LOVE to travel. I love to see and do new things. I love to get away from “real life.” And most of the time I love to come home!
- Yesterday was the second anniversary of the day my dad passed away. It's crazy to me how much I still miss him every day! Even though it's been a couple years, it's still a big deal in my life. I really miss him! But, I try not to let that get in the way of me living my life. He wouldn't want that - he would want me to be happy! And I'm sure doing my best to be happy.
- I had the wonderful opportunity to teach Relief Society in my single’s ward for 18 months. It was a tough calling for me, but I enjoyed it. I’m sure I learned more from the lessons than anyone else did. But, that’s part of being a teacher, right? They made some pretty big changes in the YSA program in the church. They got rid of all student wards and changed the boundaries to create new YSA wards and stakes. Most of my ward changed – it’s still the same bishop and a handful of the same people, but it’s still been a big change. With the “new” ward came a new calling. I am now a ward missionary. It’s kind of an intense calling because there are SO many people in our ward that we don’t know about. But, it’s been fun so far and I hope it will just get better.
- I’ve been working out 4 Pillar Fitness (a gym) since February. I LOVE it! It’s a little bit expensive, but I definitely feel like it’s worth the price. I get to work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and then I do cardio 3 days a week. In the few months I’ve been there, I’ve lost 13% body fat! I can’t even believe it! I feel better and I’m happier when I work out consistently. I also signed up to run a half marathon in July. It’ll be the first long distance race since I had knee surgery. I’m really hoping it won’t give me any grief!
- I’m still working for Sandy Parks and Recreation. Most days I really enjoy my job. Some days, not so much – but I’m sure I would feel that way at any job.
- My mom bought a boat last summer. I didn’t get to do much on the boat except hold the flag last summer because of my knee. I’m SUPER excited to go out this summer…now if only the weather would cooperate!
- And last (for today), I’ve been dating a wonderful guy named Brad. I could probably write an entire post just about him, but I choose not to…yet. He’s 6’5”, has shaggy, dark hair, and brown and/or green eyes (depending on the day). If it was up to me, I would have him around all the time! It’s crazy to me just how comfortable I am with him. I never feel like I have to be someone else and he seems to be really good at making me happy. He’s a perfect gentleman: he always opens the doors for me, he won’t let me pay, he offers to go home early when he knows I’m tired, and he even plays with my hair! What more could I ask for, right?
Now that I’ve recorded a little update, I’m going to TRY to be better at keeping a current record of my life. I can’t make any promises, but I know it’s important and I’m willing to make a new effort!
