It's Halloween. I've probably enjoyed this Halloween more than most other Halloweens I've had. I never got super into Halloween as a kid. I remember on Halloween I was probably 8 or 9. I had decided I wasn't even going to go trick-or-treating. I didn't have someone to go with or something like that. My sister Sharon talked me into going - even though I didn't have a costume. She took me around the neighborhood and when people asked what I was dressed up as, I simply told them I was dressed up as myself. It's funny that I thought of that - I haven't thought about that in years.
I think the reason this Halloween was so much fun is that I actually bought in. I planned ahead of time what I wanted to be. I dressed up as a cowgirl, complete with cowboy hat, braided hair, jean jacket, belt buckle, and authentic Wrangler boots (which I totally love). I felt like I could be a real cowgirl! The people in my office at work dressed up too. We had a cowboy, a cowgirl (me), referee, a smartie, a sunflower, a deviled egg, a vampire, Karl Malone, Mrs. Peacock, and Jill dressed up like Melissa - pregnant and all! It was hilarious. We took pictures but I didn't get them on my camera...I'll have to find out how I can get them from the person who did take them. I think the atmosphere at work today was different because we were dressed up. We did jobs that didn't really feel work. We folded our shirts for the 5K, we organized our office, we cleaned a bunch of files, we organized things for a meeting tomorrow. It was just really laid back and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. It was fun!
Todd, who works with me, brought in cookies for everyone today. I have a secret love for pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Now is the season for pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and I've been feeling rather deprived. Todd's wife had celiac like me. When I came into the office he told me that Cyd had made me cookies too. I was so happy! She made gluten-free pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and they were wonderful! I ate them all! I just love it when people do nice things for other people!
I was going to go pass out candy to the kids at my parent's house, but that didn't work out. I have a cold :( I figured it would be better for me not to be helpful and keep my germs away. So I stayed at Jared and Wendee's house and passed out candy here instead. It was a riot. The little kids that came around were so cute! I'm excited to have my own kids someday and take them trick-or-treating. When our kids were done they all came home and we went out visiting. We visited my parents. My dad told Jared to bring the kids into the house so he could take some pictures. It was great to be in their house and have my mom and my dad there and functioning. It's been such a long time since it's been like that. It was nice...I miss it! We also went over to Wendee's parent's house. I had planned to watch a movie with Krista tonight, but that just didn't happen. We're lame, and tired...so we're going to watch a movie tomorrow instead.

Bad news
I probably should have been in bed hours ago. I'm exhausted and I'm fairly certain I'm getting sick. Love it....except for the part where I don't love it at all! Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow.
Today seemed to fly by super fast. There was a lot to do at work today...as was expected. It's going to stay pretty busy for a couple weeks and then all the fun will start all over again. But after that it will all calm down for a bit. We had a meeting today with all our site supervisors. Usually it's kind of hard to fill all the spots we have, but tonight was a new story. We had kids fighting over days to work. It was kind of awesome. But, I'm sad we couldn't please everyone. I'm a please like that.
I got some bad news today. Krista called me and left me a voicemail. She was crying and all she said was, "Jetta, I really need to talk to you." I knew something was up...something bad. When I finally got a hold of her she told me that Laura's dad passed away today. Matt (Laura's dad) was like a father to Krista so she was having a hard time with it. Matt has been sick for a while now - 2 staff infections, 4 heart surgeries, a hip replacement, and 2 shoulder replacements. But we kind of figured if he survived all that he would stick around for a while. From what I hear, today he took a nap and didn't wake up. I really hate situations like this. I feel so much empathy for Laura and her family, and Krista. I wish there was something I could do to make it better or even help. But there just isn't anything. I can pray for the Spirit to stregthen them. I guess that's something. I went to Krista's tonight to keep her company. We talked about it for a while. We talked about how Laura's dad passing away made us both think of my dad. Eventually, when it's my dad's turn to return to his heavenly home, all three of us will be in the same boat so to speak. It's really interesting that we've all come together and have been faced with such similar trials. It's comforting to think about how our Heavenly Father loves us enough to send us support through our friends and those around us. When we overcome trials, we have the opportunity to help others do the same. I hope I don't have to overcome this trial for a long time! I pray that Laura will be strong and faithful...and her family too.
Death has an interesting way of changing our perspective on life. When you think about losing a loved one, suddenly things just don't seem as important or urgent. It forces you to think about what's really important. I wish we could all have that perspective all the time. I wish we could all focus on the thing that are really important in this life.

Long day
It has been a long, but good, day. My body protested when my alarm went off. So I turned it off and laid in my bed for a while. Then I reset my alarm and went back to sleep for an hour. Then I still had a hard time getting out of bed so I laid there for a while again. I eventually did make it to work...and I was only half an hour late. Well, technically I can't be late to my job - I can pretty much come and go when I want. But I wanted to be there half an hour earlier than I got there.
It was a stressful morning trying to get everything together and ready for the coaches' meeting we had tonight. But, we eventually pulled it off. I think the meeting was all right - I don't think it was the best and I definitely think there is room for improvement. At the coaches' meeting we get everyone together and go over a ton of stuff. We have everything printed out for them and I think it might be just as effective to give them the packet of info and let them read it all. They're all capable adults. But, there are just those two or three that won't read their stuff and end up causing problems because of it. Anyway, I feel like we bore half of these coaches to tears because they've been to dozens of these meetings and they're always the same! I wish I could have a stoke of brilliance and figure out a way to change things up and still have an effective meeting.
My jacket came today!! A couple months before I started my job everyone in the office got these jackets. They're super cute! They're embroidered with Sandy Parks and Recreation on them. Every time someone would wear their jacket I would get jealous. I know I'm not supposed to covet, but I covetted those jackets! We have what's called "Safety Day" at Sandy Rec. We keep track of how many days in a row we go without having an accident or an injury. The people in the office got these jackets because they got 365 safety days! I didn't feel like I could ask for one because I wasn't a part of those safety days. So I finally decided to take matters into my own hands. I called the place we got them from and I ordered my own. I got all excited about it! And today it came! I love it! I'll probably wear it every day for a while...I'm lame, I know.
I didn't get home from work until almost 9:00. It was a really long day! I still don't feel very good. But I don't feel terrible either. Hopefully it won't get any worse! I get to go to the doctor again tomorrow for my foot. It seems to be doing better, but it's still not 100%. I'm hoping he'll say it's just going to take some time.

Should've stayed in bed
I think I would have been better off not getting out of bed today. I had a really hard time getting moving this morning. I just don't feel good. My head and my neck just hurt! I suppose I can't complain too much - I don't have a fever, and I'm not stuffed up so I probably should be grateful! Work was not my favorite today. I've had to re-do the schedules I've done three times now because one of the other coordinators wants things done her way and she keeps changing what she wants! It wouldn't be a big deal because they're important changes, I just wish she would have thought of all of this when I talked to her earlier...before I made my schedules!
Tomorrow is do or die day. We usually have one of those about once a month at my job. Tomorrow is the day we have to have everything set in stone for Jr. Jazz. We meet with all the coaches tomorrow night to go over everything. We have to make sure all the teams are final and all the schedules are correct. We have to make thousands of copies of everything and get it all orgainzed. It's a little stressful. I hope we get everything done before the meetings!
I decided on my way home when I felt so crappy I wanted to die that it would probably be better if I didn't go to institute tonight. I'm a little sad I missed it, but I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten anything out of it anyway. And, I would have had to leave early anyway. I got a call saying the Bishop wanted to talk to me tonight...always a good sign. They're changing the responsibilities with my calling. I was already a visiting teaching coordinator. Now I'm taking the leadership role in that calling. I will report to the presidency instead of another coordinator. At least that's how I understand it. I'm excited for the calling. I know it's a learning opportunity for me. I know that visiting teaching is important. I'm excited to figure out new ways I can help the sisters in my ward.
Today is my one year aniversary. My car and I have been together for one year today!! I knew the day was coming up soon. Ken Garff Honda sent me an email today congratulating me on my one year aniversary...sure enough - October 28!! I still love my car just as much as I did the day I bought it!

I might be getting sick
All the forces combined against me tonight at about 5:00. My head started to hurt and my throat started to hurt and my tummy had already been hurting. I kind of wanted to just curl up in a ball and go away. But, I still had an hour of work. So I did the only thing I could think of - I took some drugs...the legal kind, of course. About an hour later I started to feel a little better. I still don't feel great, but I'm hoping a good night's sleep will fix it!
Wendee's mom had her surgery today. They said it went well and she's doing good now. We went to see her for family home evening tonight. She seemed to be in good spirits. She'll probably get to go home tomorrow. Then she'll have to take it super easy and rest for two weeks and then she'll be able to gradually return to normal life. I'm really glad things worked out for her...I hope she recovers quickly!
We had a staff meeting today and as we were discussing the things on the list of things to do this week, I realized there's a whole lot going on. This week is the set-up time for Jr. Jazz. One night we have a meeting for all the coaches. Another night we have a meeting for all the site supervisors, and another night we have a meeting for all the referees. I'm glad because that means I'll be pretty busy and it won't be hard for me to get all the hours in. But, who knows...maybe I really am getting sick and I won't have to go to work for a couple days....
Speaking of getting sick - I got a flu shot today. Maybe that's why I don't feel so hot. It's just another one of the many perks of my job. The fire department came and set up shop in our building and we all got free flu shots. I discovered that people have very differing opinions about flu shots. Some people say you should get them and others swear you shouldn't get them. I got mine because in the past my dad's doctor has suggested that his family get flu shots. I figure it won't really hurt anything, except maybe my arm.

A new resolve
I need to start running again. I think my body is craving those endorphins. I think the lack of endorphins is causing me to have a bad attitude. Maybe not a bad attitude, maybe just...I don't know. I feel like I have a lack of passion in my life. I've always thought that it's super important to be passionate about something - running, reading, hiking...doesn't really matter as long as it's something. I've slacked and I'm beginning to feel the emotional toll. I'm ready to run again, I just have to get my poor foot to feel better. I've made a resolve and this week I will wake up early and do something - even it's not running. We have a spin bike and a weights machine right here in my basement, less than 20 feet away from my bed. There's no reason why I can't use those while I recover enough to run again. And hopefully that will come soon too.
Today we had a special fast for Wendee's mom. She is going in to have surgery tomorrow. She has a bone spur or something like that on her neck and it's been causing real problems. She's going to have it fixed tomorrow and they're going to fuse some of her spine too. It's always humbling to me to participate in a special fast for a cause. I think it makes the spirit of the day just a bit stronger, at least for me. I hope that everything goes well tomorrow and that Oma begins to have some relief.

I love to see the temple...
I got to go to the temple this morning. My ward had a trip planned up at the Logan temple this morning. It was wonderful. The temple is just ... I'm at a loss for words. It's like going home after being homesick for months. I think that my spirit really does get homesick. Maybe that's weird. Anyway, it was nice to be able to leave everything outside and enter the house of the Lord where it was quiet and clean and there were so many friendly faces. It has been far too long since I have been and I know I need to figure out a way to be able to go more!
I drove up to Logan and back by myself. The rest of the group from our ward planned to go out to dinner. I knew I wouldn't be able to eat it and I wanted to get home so I opted to drive myself. On the way home I had a sudden need for Christmas music. I know it's terribly early for that, but I just love Christmas music and I feel like we get jipped only listening to it for one month of the year. Sometimes I just need a fix!
I spent the afternoon babysitting Jacob. Melodee had a violin recital and Jared and Wendee didn't want to take the baby. It was his nap-time and he should have been sleeping. But, that just didn't work out. I let him cry for about an hour before I couldn't stand it anymore. We cuddled on the couch and watched Cars instead! He loves that show!
I went over to my parent's house. I got there just as my dad was about to head out for a walk. I love to walk with him. He always has so much to say when we're walking. Most of the time (today included) he finds some way to bring up the fact that I'm still single. He's never mean or discouraging about it. I think he just worries about me. I bet he has some of the same concerns I do. I really want him to be at my wedding and I like to think that he wants to be there too. Anyway, I love it when he gives me dating advice.
They sent an email around my office yesterday saying that they wanted everyone to dress up for Halloween. I have wanted an excuse to buy a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, etc. I went to my first two rodeos this summer and I loved it. I know it would have been so much more fun if I had a hat and boot to wear! So tonight Krista and I went on a quest to find me a costume I could wear to work for Halloween, and then use at any future rodeo I may wish to attend. We were rather successful. I found cute boots at the DI and I found a hat at Wal-mart. I really wanted a belt buckle too, but I didn't end up buying one because I don't have a belt that will support a belt buckle. Apparently you can't wear a buckle on just any belt. Who knew?
I watched a scary movie with Krista, Heather, and Tyler tonight. I didn't know it was going to be as scary as it was! I thought it was just going to be a suspense movie! But, I was so stressed through the movie and I ended up with tummy-ache! I hope I can sleep it off!

It's not broken!
I finally went to the doctor for my foot today and...it's not broken and it's not nothing!! Those were the two things I was afraid of. I didn't want it to be broken and I didn't want him to say there's nothing wrong. He didn't say either of those things. He came in and asked a bunch of questions, twisted my foot in all different directions, took an x-ray and said it's not broken. Apparently the part that hurts is actually a joint between two bones in my foot. He said my arch gives a little too much so when I put pressure on my foot, the joint bends the wrong direction. He compared it to bending your elbow backward. So, he taped my foot up and gave me some inserts to put in my shoes. They have a little pad where my joint is messed up to make it so my arch can't give at all. So far, it hasn't really made a difference. My foot still hurt all day! I go back to see him again next week and I really hope it will have made a difference by then.
I got to see some friends tonight. Adrienne, Cheryl and I got together for dinner. It's been a long time in the making. We've planned a date a few different times and had to cancel for one reason or another. We were trying to get Tara in on it too, but it was just too hard to make that many schedules work out. Anyway, dinner was tons of fun! It was fun to realize just how much our lives have changed. They're both married and Adrienne has two adorable kids. And I'm working...it's all just so different from back in the day when we hung out all the time. I miss having relationships like that.
I craved pumpkin bread all day today. I decided that since I didn't have any plans after dinner, I would attempt gluten-free pumpkin bread. It worked better than I thought it would. It was good, but somehow I was left unsatisfied. I can't figure out why. Perhaps when I get to eat a slice for breakfast tomorrow I will be more satisfied? Who knows?
I bought gas today for $2.78. It was awesome! I stopped on my way home and I actually had to wait in a line to get gas! When I was done there was still a line behind me. I love that prices have come down so much! We really were getting ripped off. We just shouldn't have to pay $4.50 a gallon!
I finished The Book of Mormon today! I have been reading every morning for a while now. I really love it! I love the way it makes the day go. I haven't skipped on a weekday since I started. I have slacked a little on Saturdays. It's been good. It's still true! I'm excited to start the next scripture adventure. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do yet. I'm either going to read by topic, or go through the Preach My Gospel manual. I'll have to decide for sure soon!

Jazz game!
My body is becoming its own alarm clock. Every day this week I've woken up before my alarm has gone off. Sometimes it's good because I woke up on my own and I'm ready to go. Other times it's not so good because I'm annoyed that I didn't get to sleep 10 more minutes.
Work today was good. I forgot to take my lunch break...oops! That sometimes happens when I get caught up in everything I'm doing. My computer broke today. I called the IT guy and he came out to fix it. He thinks the fan is going out - or something. It makes a terrible noise when it stand upright, which is how it usually is - upright under my desk. Mike (the IT) moved it so that it lays flat on top of my desk. I'm really annoyed with it! It's definitely not condusive to my work habits. I might just move it back under my desk myself!
I got to go to my very first Jazz game tonight! It was a lot of fun. I went with Krista and Laura. It was definitely a good experience and I hope to be able to do it again soon. I must be a good luck charm or something cause we won!
Tomorrow is the day...the day I find out if I'm crazy or if there really is something wrong with my foot. I'm nervous. At least I get to sleep in and go to work late! My appointment isn't until 10:30 and it's here in Kaysville so I'm going to wait to go to work until after. I haven't really thought about what I'll do if I end up in a boot or cast...how are you supposed to drive with one of those? Oh please let it not be broken!

Some perks of my job...
There are some days that I wish that it wasn't lame to go to bed at 8:30. I think if I didn't think it was so lame, I would have done it tonight. But, I found some more productive things to do - like finish the laundry and put new pictures on facebook. I'm sure I'll still be in bed before 10:00!
Today was another frustrating day at work. I am struggling to figure out how I can work my schedules so they will satisfy all parties involved. It just isn't going to work! I literally spent the whole day working on three schedules. And at the end of the day I found out they aren't even going to work. Tomorrow I will do my best to fix them and then be done with them! I don't know what I'm going to do when I get 7 more leagues in a couple weeks! Bring on the overtime!
While the work at work is sometimes frustrating, I actually really love my job. One of the things I love so much is all the perks. Three specifically come to mind now:
1. I get a free flu shot next week.
2. I get to participate in a wellness program - for free. We are getting introduced officially tomorrow morning. Should be good.
3. I got an email this morning offering me free Jazz tickets! Apparently we get tickets to sporting events often. That comes in handy when you need an idea for a date. Unfortunately the date idea didn't work out so well - but I have a good back up. And the date will happen eventually.
I could probably think of many other perks. I really am super blessed to be where I am right now. I know I've been guided by my Father in Heaven to be right here right now. It's a comforting feeling - knowing I'm being looked out for.

Procrastinating
I have this bad habit of procrastinating my laundary until late at night. It probably has something to do with the fact that I'm gone all day. I can't really do it during the day if I'm not here! But, it never ceases to amaze me that I can't ever remember to start it when I first get home. Instead I wait until I'm ready for bed...and then I see the over-flowing basket and remember...I have no more clean clothes to wear tomorrow....it must be done tonight! And tonight is the result - it's 10:30, I exhausted, and I will be up for at least one more hour to make sure all my clothes are clean in the morning. Here's to procrastinating.
Today was not my favorite day at work. I still struggle with some people's ideas there. We are in the process of putting schedules together for our Jr. Jazz leagues. I made the schedules for 3 of my leagues. I wasn't sure about times and such, so I double checked the schedules from last year and I also sought the advice of one of the other coordinators. When I was confident I had enough info, I put the schedules together. When I was done I gave a copy of one of the schedules to the coordinator I consulted with. She had to plan her schedule times around the times I had used. 10 minutes later she came back to my office and went off for 15 minutes or so (while my lunch got cold) about how I needed to do it a different way. I got pretty frustrated and rather than I try to fix it all, I gave up. I figured if she was going to be so upset about it, I would just wait until she did her schedules and then I would figure mine out. I probably should have done that in the first place. It's just frustrating when people think you're doing things "wrong" when really you're just doing them different. My schedules weren't wrong, they just weren't how this coordinator would do it.

Doctors
I woke up this morning - half an hour before I wanted to! I couldn't fall back to sleep so I just got up and got ready. I got to work a half an hour early. It turned out all right though. If I work a little bit longer days for the rest of the week too, I won't have to spend any of my vacation time for the time I took for the wedding last weekend.
I'm starting to worry a little bit. I don't usually go to the doctor. I'm a fan of waiting things out. At least for me, they usually seem to work themselves out. But, I'm injured and it's not working itself out. My foot has been hurting since shortly after the marathon. I haven't done anything about it because I figure - I ran a marathon - things are going to hurt. But, over the past few days it's gotten worse. I've been doing everything I know of - I've wrapped it, iced it, elevated it, and taken ibuprofin. Nothing. So today I cracked and made an appointment to get it checked out. I'm still hoping it will somehow work itself out before Friday (which is the earliest appointment they had). In the meantime, I'm ready to start running again...except that I can't!
We had a meeting with our representative from the company that handles our retirement funds. It was interesting. I know everyone is freaking out about the economy and the stock market and such. It was reassuring to hear this guy talk about the market and our investments. He had diagrams and such from the last 50 years. If you keep it all in perspective, it's really not the devestation that people are making it out to be. I got my quarterly report for my 401K. It's lost more money than it's made since I started!! But, I know that I have a long, long time before I'll need it. I have plenty of time to ride it out and let the market bounce back.
I went to my ward FHE tonight. It was not as good as I would have it to be. The lesson was...interesting, for lack of a better word. Some people just have different perspectives that I have a hard time seeing. After the lesson the whole things kind of fizzled. The person who was supposed to provide the activity didn't show...and everyone else did! There were too many people to really do one activity. Everyone kind slowly drifted to doing their own things. It was a good opportunity to do what I do best - be anti-social and leave! I'm still glad I went. I'm slowly beginning to feel like I know people in my ward, which is a good thing.

Round two
Today was a good day. Church was good. We are going to the temple as a ward on Saturday and I'm super excited about it. It's been a long time since I've been able to go. It's hard when you're in this phase of life and you're not endowed. They don't set up batism trips very often.
I love Sunday afternoons. I've probably written about how much I love Sunday afternoons a hundred times, but I do! I love the slow-down. No one's in a hurry. We all gather in the kitchen for lunch and chat about the things we talked about in church or funny things that happened. Then we all go our seperate ways. I usually read a book or something for a bit and then take a nap. I love naps, but I don't get to have them as often as I would like. I suppose that helps me to appreciate them that much more when I do get to have them. Today after lunch and before the nap, I made gluten-free home-made chocolate chip cookies. Wendee made some for the kids and I felt left out. They were surprising yummy. I ate too many...and I ate some cookie dough too! I froze some for later. I think that's probably the way to go. Then I won't be tempted to eat the whole pan! I can just bake one or two at a time and be done!
We stopped by my parent's house today. It's been a while since we've stopped there on the way to Oma and Opa's house. My mom and dad came out and chatted with the kids for a little while. My dad is growing some hair back and he seems to be doing well. But, he told us that they are most likely going to start round two of the tandem transplant on Novemeber 14th. They also said that we are going to try to get together for family pictures some time before that. I don't know why, but hearing it today made it seem real again. It was scary the first time around and I'm sure it won't be fun the second time around. I've kind of pushed the idea of the second transplant out of my mind. I just see that my dad is doing fairly well and I'd rather think about him starting all over. It's easier to think it's not going to happen soon. But, it is. Hopefully round two will turn out just well, if not better than round one.

Weekend fun
It's been an exciting weekend. I'm so pooped I'm not sure I can make sense enough to write about everything! I'll do my best.
I went up to Idaho. My good friend Bryce got married so I went up to Clifton, Idaho to attend his reception and also spend some time with his sister - who happens to be my old roommate and very good friend. It was fun to spend some time with Kate. She cracks me up. The reception was nice, but not what I would want. I've been to a lot of receptions lately and there's a trend I've noticed that really bothers me. It seems to me that at the majority of wedding, one side of the family is left out. For example, at Bryce's wedding, all of the bride's family had flowers - the boys and the girls. But none of Bryce's family had flowers. Why? If you're going to do flowers it would make sense to me that you would do them for both sides of the family. It's something I will keep in mind when I get married - I want both families to feel like they are a part of the day.
I love my friends and I really am happy for all of them...but I am so sick of going to other people's weddings/receptions. I can't even enjoy the cake! I'm just over it.
I came home from Idaho just in time to leave again. I went out with Krista. We went to dinner at the Outback, which was very disappointing. I am usually very satisfied with the Outback, but not tonight. My steak came too done. They brought another one which was gray (steak's not supposed to be gray), kind of rubbery and not seasoned at all. But, I had already sent back my salad because it had crouton crumbs, I sent my steak once and I didn't want to send it back again. So I just didn't eat it. I'm going to see if I can find a place online to leave a comment. If I can't find one I will call the store. I've been really grateful for other people's comments in my work. Sometimes it's hard to take criticism, but I see it as an oportunity to see what other's think we need to improve. It's insightful. Hopefully it will help them.
After dinner we went to a concert - Thriving Ivory. I really like them, but there were 3 things I wasn't a fan of at this concert:
1. It was a tiny theater - standing room only. It was very uncomfortable to stand for 3 hours.
2. They had two bands open the show. We got in line at 7 and the band I went to see didn't come on until 9:30.
3. I'm fairly certain the lead singer is gay.
But, on the upside, they were very good live. I would see them again if it was in a different venue - with seats! Assigned seats would be even better - then I could show up 2 hours late and skip the mediocre opening bands.
I'm thrilled to be going to sleep in my own bed tonight. It's been a good weekend and I'm really looking forward to my day of rest!

Crouching Jetta, Hidden Doggie
The funniest thing just happened to me. I got invited to watch the Office with some friends at Brandan's house. They just paved the road in front of Brandan's house so you can't drive to the front. Instead you have to park in the back, climb through a barbed wire fence, walk through the back yard into the back door. I invited Krista to come with me. It was a little harder for her to get through the barbed wire because she was in a skirt, but we made it in just fine. The way out was a whole different story! We walked out to the fence. I helped Krista go through first and then I started to go through. I totally got stuck and while I was stuck there mid-crouch, one of their dogs came shooting over toward me barking it's head off. I maybe freaked out a little bit. Krista helped me get unstuck and we went on our way. I dropped her off at her house and I drove home. While I was driving home I thought about the situation again. I pictured it in my head and I busted up laughing! I wrote Krista a text that said, "Remember that time I almost got eaten by a dog while I was stuck in a barbed wire fence?" I knew she would get a kick out of it and drift off to sleep with a smile on her face. I wrote the text, but because of the way my phone is set up - I accidentally sent it someone else!! It wouldn't have been a big deal, but I sent it to someone I don't know very well....way too funny! I busted up laughing again! After that I just had to call Krista to tell her the story. She didn't answer but I left her a voicemail and I'm surprised she understood any of it because I was cracking up the whole time. I came home and told Jared and Wendee and they were busting up laughing. It was great! My stomach hurts from laughing so much! I totally love it!
Today was my mom's birthday. I was a bad daughter and I procrastinated to very last minute. I ended up getting her tickets to a Jon Schmidt concert in December. It worked out perfectly. I know she will really enjoy the concert. I gave her tickets to another concert he had in July. She didn't end up going though. I told her there's no way I was going to let her out of this one! Hopefully my dad will be doing all right and she will feel up to going!

Presentations
I went into work early this morning. I signed up for a presentation about delivering effective presentations. It started at 8:30 this morning...and it went until 12:30. It was kind of long, but I thought it was pretty beneficial. The lady that taught it was definitely qualified...she gave a good presentation. I kept thinking about church while she was talking. I sometimes think that I would like a teaching calling in church. It would totally scare the crap out of me, but I think I might like it. While we were talking about communicating effectively and keep the audience's attention and tailoring it to their needs, I could help but think that if all our teachers at church would do those things - people would learn more. I don't think church is about being entertained, but my focus is sometimes dependent on the teacher and their abilities. I should probably work on that... The teacher today asked us all to look for an Aha! moment - something that stuck out, something that we could use. My aha moment wasn't about a particular aspect we talked about, but more about the whole experience. It occured to me that even though I went to this presentation, it's not going to profit me anything unless I decide to make an effort to put the things I learned into action. I totally related it to the gospel. You can learn all you want about the gospel, but until you apply it to your own life, it won't really make a difference. Anyway, it was a good presentation.
The good news about the presentation being so long is it made the day go by so fast! I got all sorts of wrapped up in the leagues I was putting together. Before I knew it it was 6:00 and I hadn't even taken my lunch break! I'll probably get in trouble for that later...oops! I did eat lunch - I just did it at my desk.
I came home and made dinner. While I was making dinner all the kids went out to jump on the tramp. I ate and let it settle for a few minutes and then I went out to join them. I get a kick out of jumping on the tramp with them! They make up the funniest games. And they laugh non-stop! It's good for me. They're a good influence!
I spent some time tonight talking to Wendee. I just love her. She has different perspectives on things and I appreciate the things she has to say. She and I have the same opinion on a lot of things, but we're just different enough to keep things interesting. I'm grateful for her and everything she does for me. I'm sure she doesn't even realize all the things she does for me. I try to make it a point to thank her, but I know it doesn't always cut it. She's just great!

Reaping the benefits
I seriously struggled at work today. I was antsy and I didn't want to be there - which always makes the time go by so much slower! It doesn't help that I feel like I'm not really able to do my job. We're waiting to see if we can get some more people to register before we put all the leagues together. I've done what I can and now I'm just waiting.... It's hard to be waiting like I am and still feel the stress of a deadline. Now I'll just have to do all the work in a shorter period of time! Oh well - stress is good for me, right?
I'm already feeling the benefits of making an effort to be more involved and develop my social life. I went to institute tonight. I almost didn't go. My family went to see a movie at the Kaysville Theater tonight for "family night." I really wanted to go with them...but I was good and went to institute instead. I had a realization as I was listening to the lesson. I looked around the room and I could name probably 95% of the people that were there. It was kind of amazing. I wouldn't say I know them all, but I at least know their names...that's something right?
My old roommate and good friend Karen came to visit me at work today. She works at the elementary school next door to my building. It was so much fun to see her and chat with her. She has some great stories about the little first graders she teaches. We're going to lunch on Thursday and I'm super excited!
I have plans this weekend to see more friends. One of my friends is getting married this weekend in Idaho. His sister was my roommate and she's been wanting me to come visit her. So I'm killing two birds with one stone. It should be fun. And when I get home from Idaho I'm going to a concert with Krista. I'd say those are pretty good social plans...especially considering the incredible lack of a social I have had for the past 6 months! It goes to show that if you say a little prayer and then do your part to make it happen, Heaven Father will bless you with tender mercies! I love the way He looks out for me!

Making an effort
I've started this post three different times now. I just can't seem to find the words to say what I want to say. Today I have been reminded how short this life and just how quickly it can change. It seems like there are such hard things happening to those I associate with. It has forced me to evaluate where I'm at in my life and consider my priorities.
Lately I've been thinking about putting forth an effort. It's easy to get into a groove in life and let our efforts slip. For example - I like to think that I am a generally happy person. I love to laugh and smile and have a good time. But, if I make a habit of going with the flow and forget to put forth an effort, sometimes I find myself not-so-happy. I've found that to be true with my social life as well. It's easy for me to go to work and come home and be content to stay at home. But, if I made a little extra effort and get out and go to the ward family home evening (which was actually fun), or go to institute, or go to that church activity, I usually really enjoy myself. I suppose that's one of the tools Satan is using against me - contentment...if that's a word. Being content with something less than the best. That's kind of scary to think about. I will have to make an extra effort not to let that get me.
My car is broken...again. I've had it into the shop to be fixed twice now. I'm a little annoyed. I hate that I feel so unknowledgable. I don't know what's wrong with it. I just know it makes a noise that out of the norm. I suppose I will take it in again and see what they say. Third time's the charm?

A snowy Sunday
Today has just been a good day! I really love Sundays. I love having church at 11:00 because I get to sleep in, but I don't feel like I waste the whole day getting ready for the day. Today at church we had the primary kids from the one of the wards in our stake come do their primary program. It was pretty fun - especially because we don't get to see the little kids every week.
This afternoon was wonderful. I made bread. While it was baking I curled up on the couch with a blanket and a book. It was fun to watch the snow fall outside and be so warm inside. Eventually I found myself asleep. I woke up to the timer I set to take the bread out.
Dinner tonight was wonderful. We had beef stew...more winter food! It was perfect for the day.
I've decided I need to make more of an effort to get involved with my single's ward. I'm active on Sundays, but I haven't been going to any of the activities and such. I decided to start with family home evening this week. I've struggled with this idea because I would rather have family home evening with my family! But, my family isn't having it tomorrow because Jared is going to be in St. George until late. So, I don't have any excuse not to go. I might just find that it's lots of fun...we'll see. If it's terrible and I never want to go back - at least I can say I tried, right?

Let's do Saturday again!
I did it! I actually slept in this morning! Well, sort of. I woke up at 7:30. I was a little annoyed. I thought to myself, "So much for sleeping in." I got up for a bit and then went back to bed to be lazy. Apparently I fell back asleep. Oh I love sleeping in. However, I know it's not a good idea for me. I am pretty wide awake right now and it's past midnight! I probably shouldn't make a habit of sleeping in. It's going to through my whole schedule off!
I had a productive morning. I got ready for the day. I cleaned my room. I went through all my drawers and my closet. There's a boy in our ward doing an eagle project. He's collecting stuff for the women and children's center here in Kaysville. They said they really need clothes. So I went through all my clothes and took out anything I haven't worn in a while and put in the pile of things to be donated. That cleared out some room and made it easier to put away the clothes I washed three days ago. I definitely procrastinated folding them and putting them away! But it got done this morning.
I went over to my parent's house today. I'm worried about them. They're not very good at communicating with each other and I think it's wearing on both of them. I worry mostly about my mom. She is so involved with taking care of my dad that I think she's lost who she is. And I think her body knows it. She's been fighting a headache for a while now. Personally I think it's her body's way of dealing with all the stress. I need to figure out a way I can help her. We decided that she and I can go out every once in a while (I'm going to shoot for at least once a week). I think it will be good for her to get out of the house and away from her role as care giver. I might also see if I can't find some time to talk to my dad and see if there's anything he can do to help too. I love my mom to pieces. She's an amazing woman who has been through more than most people in this world. I hate to see her suffer.
My nephew Cameron got baptized today. My whole family was there. My dad even came with his little mask. I didn't realize that everyone was there until just now. I felt like there was someone missing...but there wasn't. It was a great day for Cam and I'm so proud of him and his decision to be baptized!! He is a great example for our family and I love him!
I saw a movie with Krista, Heather, and Michelle tonight. We saw Eagle Eye. It was intense! I really liked it. It definitely sucked me right in and kept my attention. I told Krista that the movie made me tired because it was so intense - just took a lot out of me!
It's snowing outside. It snowed off and on today. I don't want to believe that winter is here already! I love the change in seasons, but I get tired of the snow and cold pretty easily. I love fall and I love spring but I feel like those seasons always get cheated. It always snows too soon and it seems to get hot too soon in the spring. Oh well, I'm sure the snow won't stick for too long...at least not this time.

Sleeping in!
I feel like this weekend is the first real weekend I've had in months! Every Saturday all summer long I've had to wake up super early to run some ridiculous number of miles! But not this weekend. It's Friday and I've stayed up way too late...but I'm not worried about it. Tomorrow I will be sleeping in! I'm not setting an alarm. I will sleep until my body is done sleeping. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to sleep very late - that what getting up early every day does to you! But it's the thought that counts!
I made Sarah Soup today. It's called Sarah soup because we got the recipe from our wonderful neighbor Sarah. She is pretty much amazing! The soup is super simple - ground beef, lots of veggies, and rice. It was the perfect end to a cold October day. I'm already excited for lunch tomorrow!

A good day
I'm going to have to take a nap for my lunch break tomorrow. It's so late! But it's been a great day.
I feel like I didn't really get anything done at work today. I only kind of feel bad about. I didn't really have a whole lot to...and the things that needed to get done got done. Today was a deadline day for basketball. Deadline days are usually crazy busy so everyone that works in the office was scheduled. I think that's part of why I had a hard time buckling down and finding productive things to do. There were just too many people and too much going on! It was fun though!
At work we were all offered tickets to go to the Real Salt Lake soccer game tonight. It was the inagural game in their new stadium. I wasn't going to go until Jill said she would set me up on a date. She invited her husband's brother. I agreed to go and I'm glad I did. It was fun to get out and do something different. It was definitely a lot better than my last Real game experience!
After work...before I went to the game...Melodee was hanging out in the living room when I got home. She looked terribly bored. After I talked to Wendee and Jared for a minute she looked at me and said, "Jetta, will you go out on the tramp with me?" The kids ask me to jump on the tramp with them a lot. A lot of times I say no. I usually have something I need to do, or they ask me after dinner when my tummy is all full. But, this time I didn't have any excuse to tell Melly no. We went out, just the two of us and jumped and laughed out loud for 15 minutes or so. It was great. Laughing out loud is probably my favorite thing!
Today was an answer to an unspoken prayer. I was a little bit down last night. Today Heavenly Father blessed me with people and experiences to brighten my day. I'm grateful.

Concerned
I am having a strange feeling right now. Call it post-marathon depression, call it frustration, call it anxiety...call it what you will, but I just feel like something isn't right. I have a feeling of concern, but I don't know of anything in particular I should be concerned about. It's not my favorite feeling!
I really love the fall. I love the change in seasons. I love getting my warm clothes out. I love the heater in my car when it's chilly outside. I love the changing colors. Maybe more than anything I love cold weather food. I don't know what it is about it being cold outside that makes everything taste better...but it does! Plus there are so many tastey soups and stews that are just more appealing when it's cold out. I will miss the warm weather. I will miss being able to run outside. I will miss the sun. I will miss not having to scrape snow and ice off my car in the morning. But, I'm still grateful for the change in seasons.
I made apple crisp tonight. Tomorrow is a dealine day at work. We bring treats into the office as a peace offering. Showing our co-workers that we appreciate what they do helps relieve some of the stress of dealine day. I've never made apple crisp, but my old roommate Becky used to make it for us and I loved it!! I'm pretty sure mine didn't turn out quite like Becky's, but I hope it will still be good. I'm a little sad that it has to sit all night...I wish there was some way to bring it fresh baked. I would love it if our office smelled as good as my house does right now!
I'm getting less and less sore everyday. Today my muscles only protested a few times. I still can't wear real shoes...I think I really did a number to my feet! I've been wearing my crocs since Saturday. Maybe I'll be able to handle real shoes tomorrow.

Professional walker
I'm tired. It's been a long time since I've been up this late. Yes, it's only 10:45...but I go to bed early! I'm only awake now because I forgot that I had a bag full of stinky, wet, smokey running clothes. I knew if I didn't get them in the wash I would forget about them and they would probably end up moldy or something! Sick! So here I am awake past my bedtime to ensure the cleanliness of my clothes!
I went back to work today. It was good. I think I needed the break I got over the weekend.
I think I'm officially on the mend. I was a little stiff this morning...but by the time I got to work I was walking like a pro! I can even go up and down stairs without looking like I'm 100 years old! I'm pretty proud. It doesn't take much!

Sore and crazy!
I was right. I do pretty much hate my life today. I am beyond grateful that I thought far enough ahead to take today off of work too. I don't think I would have survived the day at work! I'm actually a little nervous for tomorrow! I hurt everywhere. Hopefully today will be the worst of it and it won't be so bad when I wake up tomorrow. I can only hope! It was funny to try to go up and down stairs today. My muscles have no give in them at all. By the end of the day my legs were giving out. It was a good indicator that it's time to go to sleep. Muscles repair themselves while we sleep so I have to get lots of it for a while.
I really am crazy, too. I signed up for the Ogden marathon today! It's in May. I read on a marathon recovery site that it's important to have a new running goal when your marathon is over so you don't get the post-marathon depression that's apparently pretty common. I'm not so much worried about the depression as I am the race filling up before I decide if I really want to run it. I read on their site today that you can transfer your registration to a different race if you want to. So I figured I'll sign up for the marathon - that way if I do decide to run it, I won't have to miss out because the race filled up. And if I decide I don't want to run it - I'll just run the half instead or something.
I finally found a pair of jeans today!! I went over to the mall. I found a pair at Vanity. It's kind of funny to me that the pair I found is the same style as the ones I already have, just a different wash. But, I like them. As I was driving home I thought how silly it was of my to just buy one pair. If it's going to be this much of a struggle, I should probably stock up! I still need jeans...I'm just not quite as desperate as I have been for the past couple weeks.
I cooked dinner for the family today. I've wanted sweet and sour chicken for a few weeks now, but it requires the use of the kitchen, which doesn't happen too often because I don't want to be in the way while Wendee's cooking dinner. But this morning I told Wendee that I wanted to make it and that I would make it for the whole family so she wouldn't have to cook. She was agreeable. The kids love sweet and sour chicken. They call it Jetta chicken. It was a win-win situation. Wendee didn't have to cook, the kids liked it, and I got sweet and sour chicken!

Home sweet home!!
I am almost positive that I am going to hate my life in the morning!! I thought I was sore yesterday...but that was before today. Today I feel like an old lady! I know that sitting the car for 4 or 5 hours on the way home didn't help anything. And I know that I didn't drink enough water today which doesn't help. But, I'm fairly certain that tomorrow is going to hurt real bad. Maybe I'll take some drugs before I go to sleep. And maybe I'll put some more drugs on my night stand so I can take them when I wake up!
Today was a good day. We got up and went to breakfast before watching the first session of Sunday conference. It was wonderful. It's apparent that those men are truly called of God. They are His mouth piece and you can feel the authority they have. I love it! We had to check out of the hotel at noon. We started our journey home. We listened to the afternoon session in the car. The drive got pretty long after conference was over. Both Wendee and Oma fell asleep, which left me to keep myself awake! Good news is - we made it!
I've always heard that runners are crazy. I get told that on a regular basis. But today I really am questioning my sanity. Here I am - exhausted and sore beyond belief and I'm already planning the next one! I want to run the Ogden marathon in May. That will give me a couple months to recover and then I'll start training again in January. We'll see - I want to do it and prove that I can do better than I did. At the same time I don't want to overdo it and hurt myself or get super burnt out. I'll have to do some serious thinking about it before I make a decision.

The marathon is over!!
Things did not go as well as I had hoped they would. We woke up this morning, drove to the park, and loaded the buses to go up to the starting line. As we were loading the bus, it started raining. We knew there was a storm coming, but last night they said it would hit at about noon and rain all day. They were wrong. It rained for the whole race...except for the part where it was hailing! At mile 5 I got a little warm so I took off my long sleeve shirt and gloves and dropped them at the clothes drop. I kicked myself for the whole rest of the race. It got more and more cold as the miles went on. When I got to mile 7 or so, I cried. It was not what I had signed up for. I went from head to toe (my shoes were even sloshing), and I was cold! I was not happy about it. I never really recovered after that. I did a lot of walking and I cried quite a bit as well. When I finally made it across the finish line I lost it. The nice man that gave me my finishers medal held on to my arm and told me how great it was that I finished and that it was all over now. And the lady that was next him wrapped me up in a big hug, which I really appreciated. I was sad that my mom wasn't able to come cheer me on at the finish line this year. I was also glad she hugged me so tight because I was about ready to fall over. I hurt everywhere!! I continued to cry while we walked around a little bit and eventually went to find our car. I cried for probably half and hour. I cry when I'm tired - it's a curse I have. But I also cried because I wasn't happy with the way the run went. Granted - it's a marathon and I finished and most people would be thrilled with that. I am happy I finished, but I really wanted to do better than the first one. I'm determined to run another one...I feel like I have something to prove. I know I can run that race faster than I did and I will prove it!
We got back our hotel. We usually fight over the shower to cool off and get all the salt from our sweat off. Today we fought over the shower because we were all freezing. After we all got out of the shower we turned on the second session of conference. I cried all the way through the first two talks. Elder Worthlin and Elder Holland both talked about adversity. Wendee suggested that maybe I had to have a terribly, hard race so that I could really appreciate the conference talks. I think she just might be right! I'm already excited for my conference edition of the Ensign!
I'm ready for bed and it's only 8:50. I love it! I hope I can get comfortable enough to sleep well tonight. I'm so tired...but I'm also really sore!!

It's go time!
I have a bad habit of thinking in terms of what I can write as my status on facebook. I often find myself thinking things like, "Jetta is so tired!" or "Jetta is running a marathon on Saturday." or "Jetta has very thoughtful co-worker." I think it's a sign - I may be addicted to facebook. But, I guess in my defense - I don't actually update my status as often as I think about it. Right now my status says "Jetta says it's go time." And it really is go time!! My bags are packed. Everything's set to go in the morning. Yikes!! I love it! I really hope the trip and the race go well!
I really do have very thoughtful co-workers. Yesterday Linda told me to bring my running shoes in so everyone could sign them. I have encouraging words from people I have grown to love to help keep my feet going. I'm going to take them over to my parents house tomorrow morning so they can sign them too. That way I can at least sort of have the people I love at the race with me. I loved having my mom there last time and I really, really wish she was coming this time. Maybe next time...
My co-workers also gave me a little gift bag. It had a card with words of encouragement from everyone and it had a huge bottle of water and some gum..."We're EXTRA proud of you." Way too cute! I love it!

Crunch time
My co-worker told me today that if I think about getting sick I will get sick...but if I think about being healthy and strong, then I won't get sick. I'm doing my best to think healthy thoughts, but I'm still super paranoid. There are a few people in my office who are suffering with colds right now. I will be so sad if I get a cold before the race!! After the race I can handle a cold...but not before!! Please not before!!
I feel unprepared for the adventure this weekend. Tomorrow I have to work all day and then tomorrow night I'm babysitting the kiddos so Jared and Wendee can go to the temple. And then it will be Friday morning - time to jouney down to the land of St. George. And then one more night's sleep and it's go time! I just can't believe it's marathon time already!! Yikes!! I don't know what I'll do when it's over - I'll have to find something else to look forward to.
I registered to vote today! They read us a letter in sacrament meeting on Sunday that encouraged us to be active in our community and take the opportunity to vote. I told my friend Trent that I didn't even know how to register to vote. He said his mom knew and he would ask her for me. On Tuesday at institute he brought me a voter registration card. I filled it out and dropped it in the mail today. I'm kind of excited about. And I'm grateful for helpful people like Trent to help keep me in the know!!
